We are the Champions.

Hi Friends. Well I hope you all had a great Christmas and a safe and happy new year. I heard some disturbing news the other day from Chris Ive, who many people would know is a long standing umpire at the VBCA. When he was on his way to umpire in national champs he had a call that his house had been burnt almost to the ground. All are ok and in his words things can be replaced and they still have a son and grand children. Thanks fire alarms for doing your job. Our thoughts are with you and your family.

The first half of this blog I want to focus on the performance of our Vic side that I am pleased to say is now both the First T20 national champions and the four times 40 over ODI national champions. Congratulations to the team and to all who made this happen. To the Capitan Brett Wilson: Great job creating history being the only team from my recollection to win four carnivals/national championships in a row. I was not able to attend however I did listen in to the live broadcasts, thanks to the NSWBCA for a great job live streaming this event on most days. [Read More]

Hi everyone in Blind Cricket Land

It has been a few weeks since I posted my last some would say lunatic ravings about the game of blind cricket in Victoria and we have a bit to catch up on. The games, people getting married some more games and some upcoming events that people should know about.

It’s with sadness that I have to begin a post with this news however if I didn’t mention the below I would be doing both the man and the game a great injustice. In the past week an elder statesman of the game of blind cricket passed Mr William (Dick) Wyatt, I have limited memory of Dick outside of to say, when I started playing for the then Royals club in the mid 80’s Dick was still playing and was in his mid 60’s. Round 2 summary by Ty Atkinson

This game St Paul’s and Burwood is always a good one to watch with both teams having a strong fielding and bowling line-ups and many of the state team players involved. Before getting to the action. Congratulations to David Gauci for his wedding. Now done to the on field stuff, with a delayed start due to rain a fact that will become more relevant later, this game started with St Paul’s batting first.

St Paul’s put on a total that made many think the game would be hard to loose with 157.  The top scorer again for the side was Peter Loh with 40 retired, also some good batting by the Capitan Lindsey Heaven and Brett Wilson with 21 and 23 respectively and Chris Bertuch a B1 (Totally) with 12 runs off the blade. Brandon Fox was the only bowler to take multiple wickets with 2.

Let the chase begin said the cricket gods and it did on day two, however not to plan early for the Burwood team with the Capitan David Gauci going cheaply, with the side at three down for not many another of the returning players from years gone by stepped up and took the game on. David Gordon added a well structured 35 to the total before falling just short of his retirement. Scott Peucker clewed his way to 9 and when he want most people in the stands that were not Burwood faithful had the money on St Paul’s. Lindsey Heaven and Bret Wilson were the main dangers with the ball having taken 5 or the wickets to fall. Not that we bet on games of blind cricket that is.  Also not if past Capitan and veteran of the game David Goodman had a say he and the remaining batters along with the ever increasing Extra count began to get closer and closer to the total.

Now for the same reason the game on the other ground started early this game had 15 minutes added to the end, which reason the rain on day one. With failing light and wickets in hand an issue the Burwood team were down to the last batters just past the normal scheduled end play and within that dreaded 15 minutes they lost the last wicket to give St Paul’s 4 points for the first innings win.

Round 2 summary by Ty Atkinson

This game between Institute and Glenferrie had the makings of a thriller with the in and out for each side over the two day game. If both sides are to be a big threat they need to have players on the park. Institute had to bat first and posted a good but gettable target of 126. A total i was sure at the time could have been reached given the batting that Glenferrie had and the two highest ranked players not attending on day two for Institute, Peter and Matthew. It’s ok it was Matthews’s bucks party so all will be back to normal soon.

The game started as planned with Peter Robinson on day one again leading his team with an unbeaten 43 and the old stager Michael Janes with a solid 21, outside of this however the Extras were the winner with a total of 42. The team batted on at the start of day two with and lost some quick wickets that did not really harm the plan as they were hunting quick runs, Institute faced its maximum of 60 overs giving the Glenferrie team around 52 or so over’s to chase down the total. Bowling was shared around with the highlight being Brendan Spencer taking his first wicket. Look out for this young man in the future is my tip. No betting please.

With that in mind the Glenferrie team started the game needing only around 2.1 runs per over. Ty Atkinson opened and retired on 40 and I am saddened to say that is about the some of the highlights package for the team with the other team members putting on only 20 runs. Peter Hyczka was run out in tragic circumstances with some poor hearing from his partner at the time. Ok that was me so I can take some of the blame. We found out later it was a bit of a muddle all round by both players and officials however that’s the game of cricket for you. Notable bowling for Institute was Paul Annable with 3 wickets and Michael Sadhu also with 3 as the acting Capitan on day two.

In the end the Glenferrie team only made 74 and after playing on for a time with institute batting again and the light closing in the game was called off with Institute taking home the 4 points for the first innings win.

Round 1 summary by Ty Atkinson

To start thing off it is a great pleasure to see many old faces with some past players returning to the game, and many new ones that are playing in the 2011/2012 season for the first time. A few returning players that you all may know are Michael Janes, David Steeds, David Gordon and Bill Kelly. We have also seen a great intake of new players and I am sure you will all get to know them as they build a cricket name for themselves over the coming months.

Let's get down to the action of the first round of the season

Some may say this was a planned meeting in round one with the combatants from last year's final going at it again first up in this season's opening game. It was institute that took home the win. With the St Paul's team setting a modest although some would say a defendable total of 90, the Institute team lead by the Captain Peter Robinson and long time player Rob Mascitti with 41 and 13 respectively put on a show for the crowds getting over the line to claim first innings points.

The highlights for me in this game were the shining starts, Peter Loh and Peter Robinson. These two players are consistent and lead the way for their respective teams week in and week out. We all know Peter Robinson as he has a long history and I believe would be one of the top 5 blind cricket players of all time with a career that has seen him in the game for almost 30 years.

Peter Loh on the other hand is a mature aged recruit to the game and even from his early days has shown an aptitude and the ability to perform under pressure. I can see a long career for this man in all forms of the game if he chooses to.

So to rap this game Institute took home the win and get 4 points over what many say are the biggest rival to them in the chase for the minor premiership for this season.
