Round 8 – Glenferrie B.C.C. v St. Paul's B.C.C. - Day 2

As the temperature nudged 40 the action on the field also heated up with possibility of three teams still making the Grand Final. At the start of Round 8 Glenferrie was on top of the ladder with 32 points, St. Paul's in second position with 30 points, Burwood third on 14 points and Institute in last place with 10 points.

Should Burwood get the an outright victory against Institute they would move to 24 points and face St. Paul's in Round 9 to possibly secure a spot in the Grand Final. This was a strong possibility for Burwood as they had Institute on the ropes after last week.

Resuming play on Day 2, St. Paul' was set a task of chasing 155. Lindsay Heaven and Bruce Sandilands opened the batting for St. Paul's. Bruce was soon dismissed LBW for 1 off the bowling of Ian Walsh. Lindsay Heaven was unlucky not to reach 40 after he was bowled by Walsh for 34. Tim Mitchell made his second highest score of the season reaching 16 before he was bowled by Dean Calder. Battling the flu Paul Ravenarki was adjudged LBW off the bowling of Kingsley Williams for 17. Brett Wilson was solid and made an unbeaten 30 including hitting the winnings runs to take the St. Paul's 1st innings score to 158 and get 4 points for a 1st innings win.

Ian Walsh was the best of the Glenferrie bowlers taking 3/18 from 9 overs.

Glenferrie will be looking to win next week against Institute to prove that they are good enough take on St. Paul's in the Grand Final.

Round 8 – Institute B.C.C. v Burwood B.C.C. - Day 2

Resuming 6/188, Burwood quickly added 10 to their 1st inning's total to end all-out for 198 after facing 1.1 overs on Day 2. Brian Talbot was the not out batsmen on 29.

Burwood was keen to get through their overs quickly to give them the maximum opportunity to dismiss Institute twice and get an outright victory. A Burwood bowling attack lead by Brian Talbot who would finish with the excellent figures of 5/11 from 8 overs went through the Institute batsmen like a bad curry. The only opposition Burwood faced was Tony Montesanti who top scored with 28. After 24.2 overs, Institute was all out for 47.

David Goodman forced the follow-on and Institute was required to open their 2nd innings with 10 minutes to tea. The instructions for the Institute batsmen were to block out the remaining overs in the day and prevent an outright to Burwood. This is what Institute set out to do but the Burwood bowlers forced the Institute batsmen to play shots and this is what Peucker did to Matt Horsey when he was bowled on 5. Things started to look bad for Institute as tea was called.

When play resumed after tea it was all Burwood, in particular Scott Peucker as he spun a web over the Institute batsmen. Three ducks, including a couple of the golden variety, saw Scott Peucker get a hat trick and return the excellent figures of 5/2 from 9 overs and an outright victory looked a big possibility for Burwood.

Natale Cutri and Robert Mascitti never gave up, both displaying beautiful defensive batting and give Institute a glimmer of hope to avoid an outright defeat.

With the time quickly approaching 5:15 pm, Scott Peucker claimed the wicket of Frank Bauer in what would be the last over the day. Greg Ingram then stepped out onto the crease and needed to withstand the 5 remaining balls of Peucker's over. A nervous Greg cautiously blocked the next 4 balls. It came down to the last ball of the last over for Burwood to get an outright victory. Peucker stepped into his shortened run-up, the ball hit Ingram's legs and despite a vociferous appeal for LBW, the LBW appeal was turned down as the ball was adjudged to have been missing leg stump.

At stumps Institute was 7/26 after facing 39 overs. Matt Horsey top scored with 5, the next highest score was Frank Bauer on 2.

Unfortunately for Burwood, their finals hopes were over as they only managed 4 points to consolidate third spot on the ladder. Despite this Burwood will go into their next game against St. Paul's with boosted confidence and the aim of finishing the season on a high.

Peucker finished with 5/2 from 9 overs, Brian Talbot bowled well with little reward to and ended with 1/14 from 10 overs and the unlucky Goodman bowled 6 great overs to finish with 1/3 from 6 overs.

Round 8 – Glenferrie B.C.C. v St. Paul's B.C.C. - Day 1

Glenferrie and St. Paul's met on Ground 2 in a possible preview match to the the Grand Final. Glenferrie won the toss and elected to bat. Chris Stevens opened the batting with Ian Walsh but was bowled by Lindsay Heaven on 9. Ian Walsh didn't last long either when he was bowled by Bruce Sandilands for 1. The top order collapse continued when David MacFarlane was caught by David Steeds off the bowling of Lindsay Heaven for 0. Kingsley Williams went onto reach 20 before he was run-out.

Dean Calder was bowled by David Steeds for 2 and John Tongalea was run-out by Paul Ravenarki for 17. Ty Atkinson played some blistering shots to reach an unbeaten 42. Marco Curralejo was bowled by Chris Bertuch for 7 and Sophia Seng was bowled by Rav for 0.

At stumps Glenferrie is 10/154 after 59 overs.

Round 8 – Institute B.C.C. v Burwood B.C.C. - Day 1

Burwood, upon winning the toss, elected to bat on a very fast Ground 1, where anything that beat the field ran away for four. David Gauci and Brenden Fox opened the batting but David's recent good form ended when he was bowled by Andrew Close for 5. Brenden then combined with Marilyn luck to take the Burwood score along fairly sedately for the next several overs. Luck was bowled by Robert Mascitti and Fox was joined at the crease by Scott Peucker. Peucker and Fox then appeared to play with more aggression to take the Burwood's score into triple-figures. Brenden was eventually adjudged LBW off the bowling of Robert Mascitti for 24. Peucker went onto to reach an unbeaten 44 and amazingly achieved this by running 5 when he was on 39 when the Institute fieldsmen could not find the ball. It was suggested that Peucker hadn't ran this much since hearing that the canteen at work had a sale on hotdog's.

Ben Peacock who was on loan from Glenferrie took to the crease and was soon back in the pavilion when he was adjudged LBW off the bowling of Robert Mascitti for 1. He was soon followed by David Goodman who was run-out by Matt Horsey for backing-up to much.

At stumps after 55 overs Burwood is 6/188 with Brian Talbot and Hamish McKenzie at the wicket. Brian is on 27 and Hamish 14.
